Understanding The Fundamentals of Plumbing

Plumbing is a complex subject. However, the complexities of plumbing are often quite different than what people would assume. For example, many people assume that the subject is too complex to learn on their own. But in reality there are some simple plumbing projects that anyone can learn how to perform. But at the same time it’s also important to learn which plumbing situations should involve a local plumber.

One of the first basics is to simply have the number of a local plumber on hand. For example, someone in Austin would want to have numbers for plumbers in Austin, TX. The reason to look for Plumbers in Austin TX comes down to how quickly they can take care of the problem. Looking locally means ensuring that transit time is kept to a minimum.

The next thing to keep in mind is that the essentials of plumbing are fairly simple. People often think about their home in terms of masses of interlocked pipes. But it really comes down to two seperate systems. A home’s plumbing system consists of a drain-water vent system. This is also known as a DWV. The home’s second component is the water supply system.

On top of this there’s an adjunct system known as fixtures. The fixtures act as a bridge between water coming in and water going out. This sounds quite complex at first. But in reality the seeming complexity of a fixture is fairly commonplace. Fixtures are basically just anything where water can both come in and go out. Sinks are a classic example of fixtures. The main components of a fixture are drain pipes, traps and vents.

The water supply system uses pressure to draw water in from either a city water supply or wells. If the water comes in from the city then it’s typically coming off of something called the main pipe. The main pipe is, as the name suggests, just a huge pipe. This pipe usually runs parallel to the closest street in an area.

The water travels through the pipes due to water pressure. If pressure goes down then it won’t reach the higher parts of a home. If showers and faucets suddenly stop then it’s usually an issue with water pressure. This problem is often caused by water leaking through a loose pipe connection. If that’s the case then one can usually tighten it himself. But if there’s damage to the pipe it needs to be handled by the professionals.

The DWV is considerably more complex than the water supply system. The water supply has the advantage of using energy in the form of water pressure to move things around. The DWV mainly relies on gravity. Using gravity to move things about means that the system needs considerably more engineering work to function. The pipe system also needs to be larger on account of issues with solid waste. There’s also additional issues which come from the fact that these pipes are connected to a sewer line.

The DWV uses drain traps to prevent anything, including smell, from moving from the sewer into one’s home. Drain vents are also used to add air into the pipe system. This helps encourage proper movement in the DWV.

Leaks are still an issue with the DWV. It often manifests as wet ceilings, mold and horrible smells. The DWV typically has pipes in a more recessed and hidden position. This means that one will usually need to call on the professionals to handle DWV issues. A homeowner should tackle the DWV from a more preventative angle. For example, one should try to keep pipes from becoming clogged and make proper use of the sink’s garbage disposal.
